Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School (Chinese: 保良局蔡繼有學校, abbreviated PLKCKY) is a private independent school for boys and girls aged 6–18, ranging from primary through to International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma students. Situated in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong (previously in Tin Hau prior to 2009), PLKCKY is a school with approximately 1,600 students. The school opened and moved into its new campus in September 2009.[2] The teacher to student ratio is 1:10.[3] Approximately 60% of teachers at PLKCKY are native-English speakers, while the other 40% are Chinese.[3]

Education[edit]

This school is divided into primary and secondary sections, in which primary consists of 5 years while secondary has 7 years. This is different to many schools (especially local Hong Kong schools). [4] This has been explained by the founding principal, saying, "We want to let students have a secondary experience earlier on."

Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, recognized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offers a distinctive Primary education system that spans from Year 1 to Year 5. Central to its curriculum is a robust bilingual education program, designed to ensure fluency in both English and Chinese upon completion of Primary schooling. Each class within the Primary section benefits from the unique instructional approach of having both a native English-speaking teacher and a Chinese teacher. This dual-teacher system fosters an immersive learning environment where students engage deeply with both languages, enhancing their linguistic abilities and cultural understanding. The school's commitment to bilingualism prepares students for a globalized world, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also effective communication across different cultures.

Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School has achieved notable recognition in the realm of international education, being ranked 17th globally on the Global Top IB Schools[5] list based on the latest 2023 results. This prestigious ranking underscores the school's commitment to delivering an exceptional IB curriculum and maintaining high academic standards. Additionally, within the highly competitive educational landscape of Hong Kong, the school stands out as the 5th ranked IB institution, highlighting its prominence and excellence in the region. These accolades reflect the school's success in not only fostering academic excellence but also in preparing students to excel in a complex, interconnected world.
