Hozan Brader, with real name Mehmet Şerif Torun (born 1958 in Mardin, Turkey), is a Turkish-Kurdish singer and composer.
Early life[edit]
Born in 1958 in Artuklu of Mardin, Brader's father was a famous denbej singer (bard) known in Artuklu and the surrounding area.[1][2] Brader's passion for music actually came from his father. His first musical instrument was the pipe, which he bought by giving his shoes to a second-hand dealer.[3] Later, at the request of his older brother Brader, he bought him a baglama and he learned to play baglama when he was 16.[1]
When Brader was a child, he was translating Turkish songs into Kurdish with a tape recorder his mother brought him from a pilgrimage.[3] He was imprisoned for 3.5 months because he produced this type of music while he was in high school. He said in an interview that he did this just because he wanted to sing.[1] After being released from prison, he was exiled from the country in 1986 and settled in the Netherlands. In 2004, the ban on entry to Turkey was lifted.[4]
Brader also draws and writes articles. Brader released his first album in 1995 with the cassette called 'Min Sare' (trans; It's cold).[2][3]
