Maharaja (transl.Great King) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Nithilan Saminathan, who co-wrote the script with Raam Murali. It is jointly produced by Sudhan Sundaram's Passion Studios and Jagadish Palanisamy's The Route. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi in the titular role, alongside Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Singampuli, Bharathiraja, Vinod Sagar and P. L. Thenappan.

The film was officially announced in February 2023 under the tentative title VJS50, as it is Sethupathi's 50th film as the lead actor, and the official title was announced that July. Principal photography commenced the same month. It was predominantly shot in Chennai, and wrapped by mid-July. The film has music composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, cinematography handled by Dinesh Purushothaman and editing by Philomin Raj.

On 1 February 2023, Nithilan Saminathan announced that for his second directorial venture after Kurangu Bommai (2017), he would collaborate with Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap in the lead roles dor an action drama film. Tentatively titled VJS50, an inaugural puja ceremony was held the same day at Chennai with the presence of the film's cast and crew members.[1] Principal photography began the same month. It was shot predominantly in Chennai, and wrapped by mid-July. The film's official title, Maharaja, was announced on 12 July 2023. In addition to the title, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam,Abhirami, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Singampuli, Bharathiraja, Vinod Sagar and P. L. Thenappan were announced being part of the ensemble cast.[2]

Music[edit]

The music and background score is composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, in his first collaboration with Sethupathi; second with Saminathan after Kurangu Bommai.[3]
