Dabaru (The chess master) is a 2024 biographical sports drama film based on the life of the youngest grandmaster of India, Surya Sekhar Ganguly directed by Pathikrit Basu. The film unfolds a motivational tale about a young chess player, Surja, who rose from the alleys of North Kolkata during 1988-1998 to finally become a grandmaster in 2001. As a result of his alcoholic father, Gauri Shankar, loan shark Chandu, and other individuals, he encounters several physical, monetary and mental obstacles in his voyage. However, in every battle he fights, his grandfather, Nabin Sarkar and mother Karuna Devi stand by him like solid rock. Surja's journey is greatly influenced by coach Rathindra, who recognizes and hones Surja's talent. In addition to taking us through a broad spectrum of emotions, Dabaru also makes an important statement about how chess and life are remarkably similar.[1][2] The film became a huge box-office success receiving positive reviews from critics.
