Nurullah Bey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nurullah Bey or Şenbolu Nurullah (born 1821 in Kırıkdağ, Hakkâri - died 1881 in Hakkari region) was the emir of Hakkâri who lived in today's Kırıkdag region in the 19th century.

History[edit]

He took the lead with Bedir Khan Beg in the Kurdish uprisings against the Ottomans in the 19th century.[1] He is known for both the uprisings and the massacres against Assyrians in the region under his rule.[2][3] During his reign, the Hakkari region included cities such as today's Yüksekova, Şemdinli, Başkale, Gevaş, Beytüşşebap and Amedi.[4] Towards the second half of the 19th century, the Kurdish uprisings were suppressed, and Nurullah, who was defeated, escaped and first took shelter in the Berdasor castle in Iran, but later surrendered. Nurullah was deported to Crete in 1854, but returned to the Sheikh Ubeydullah uprising in 1879 where he took part. In 1881, when this rebellion was crushed, Nurullah was killed.[5]
